The Coupled Map

A cross-disciplinary atlas in two halves: the map of knowledge (what is true) bound, span by span, to the map of practical wisdom (what to do). Most of human wisdom lives on the bridges between them — never at either end.

The idea-names tagging each bridge are drawn from the vocabulary of Mortimer J. Adler's A Syntopicon: An Index to The Great Ideas, published by Encyclopædia Britannica in 1952 as volumes two and three of Great Books of the Western World. They are used here as a shared vocabulary and are grouped for this map's own argument. None of the Syntopicon's topic outlines, reference tables or text is reproduced, and this map is neither published by nor associated with Encyclopædia Britannica.
